Laban Movement
Christine Dugan Sheila Buttermore LMA Research Project Inner vs. Outer Connetivity Laban movement analysis is the language of dance and is considered to be sacred geometry that uses five crystallized forms that calculate movement and offers equations through symbols to make sense of everyday movement . By using laban motifs/symbols in an equation, the end product is almost always a dance or a deliberate movement sequence. The ability to use the laban system has made me aware of how I both observe and understand dancing in every sense of the word and idea of movement as I study as a performing arts major at Raritan Valley.The concept of inner vs. outer connectivity is what intrigues me the most so far out of they many interesting facts and ideas taught and spoken about within this semester taking into account that we were exposed to was only the tip of a giant ice berg that is LMA and all that it offers. The simple concept of thinking about, and emotionally feeling a movement and wher e that movement is intended to go through space before actually moving it is something I feel that I have been knowingly over analyzing in all of my years of dancing both in and out of class. Learning about inner vs. uter connectivity brought an awareness and a validity to my understanding of dance along with developing my ability to put inner states into outer expressions. In order to portray a specific emotion or gesture through movement, one must consider their Spatial Intent. ââ¬Å"Spatial Intent is a clarity and specificity of outer destination in movement that has the effect of promoting and organizing inner connectivityâ⬠(1) For example, to execute a movement with a heavy intent such as stomping your feet on the ground, thinking of a heavy mass or emotion will allow that stomping to be perceived as an undeniably heavy, weighed action.When dancers have not been introduced to labanââ¬â¢s inner and outer connectivity concept, they are only achieving the technical aspect of the movements that they are taught, failing to connect with the inner dynamics that bring life and intent to performance. An example of how simply this can be taught to even the youngest of dancers would be to have them imagine that they are holding a beach ball in their arms, giving them a mental visualization of the correct placement of where their arms should be.By using labanââ¬â¢s method, this will eventually become an intrinsic component of their movements thereby developing muscle memory and natural inner and outer connectivity. Within one of the books that assisted me throughout my research, ââ¬Å"Body Movement: Coping With The Environmentâ⬠it states, ââ¬Å" When, however, a specific spatial intent is added, such as a gathering movement of embracing or a scattering movement of repelling particular objects, a new tension is created between the object and the initiation of the movement in the body, and a particular, rather than a general, spatial shape is produc ed as the movement proceeds. (2) This book was a collaboration of Irmgard Bartenieff, the man who created the basic six exerciseââ¬â¢s and the BF principals taught in LMA and Dori Lewis from the 19th century. This along with several other quotes and passages once again validated my original thoughts on the simplicity and efficiency of these methods for teaching and ways of thinking of movement. Aside from form and spatial points as well as technique being what makes dance, emotion comes first in order to authenticate and embody what that dance really means to you.Without emotion and purpose behind a dance, there is no inner connectivity to transcend out onto those watching you move. It is not hard to tell the difference between watching a dancer who is committed and invested in the movements they are making from head to toe and seeing the purposeful look in their eyes as they follow the direction they are moving, compared to a dancer who seems to appear somewhat jumbled up in the ir movement, displaying lack of directional intent and body connectivity with a blank look on their face and without emotion in their eyes.Audiences universally go to see performances with the intention of having an emotional experience whether it be happy, sad, funny, ect. It is up to the performers to fulfill those expectations. It is through the skill and inner and outer connectivity of the performers that these expectations can be met. It is with the knowledge that I have gained through learning about Labanââ¬â¢s theories and concepts that will allow me to have a new level of awareness and sense of connection.I will apply what I have learned with a conscious effort to implement my body connectivity both inner and outer as well as how I portray my movements as I go forward in dance. Studying Laban theories and concepts has given me a deeper appreciation of both performance and everyday movement. I look forward to continuing my understanding of this amazing language of dance th at was created by Rudolph Laban, who made an intangible art from, tangible.

Strikes in the Early 1930’s
Strikes were common place in the early 1930â⬠³s in all industrial and manufacturing corporations. They were used to win power away from the corporate giants, and put it in the hands of the working class. Labor used strikes for a variety of reasons, some for higher wages, some for working conditions, some for safety on the job, and still others for recognition. In a book entitled, ââ¬Å"I Remember Like Today: The Auto-Lite Strike of 1934â⬠Philip A. Korth and Margaret R. Beegle compile an oral history account of this fight for the rights of the working class. To gain the knowledge acquired for this book, the authors searched high and low to ind the living survivors of this turning point for organized labor in Toledo. After discovering the individuals who could help, the investigators interviewed and then recorded the men and womenâ⬠s accounts of the strike. Then they transcribed the interviews verbatim. This method provides for a more personal approach to learning what had happened in the strike. It allows the reader to see what actually happen through the The book is a collection statements, stories, and feelings of the men and women involved in the strike. Each individual tells their story based on headings, and that is what complied the chapters. In this method, the reader gets to hear all sides of the story because Korth and Beegle get some who were union supports, union organizers, some who were strike breakers, management. Certainly no critic can say, this book only tells one All of the forth-coming events, activities, and problems took place in Toledo, Ohio at the Electric Auto-Lite Company. The Electric Auto-Lite Company was a part of the automotive assembly industry. It used mainly unskilled workers to operate the machinery, and the machinery was that There were two separate strikes at Auto-Lite. The first was used to orce the company into recognizing the union; that was the first step towards collective bargainingâ⬠¦ recognition. It stared on February 23, lasted only four days, and resulted in the reinstatement of the 15 workers who walked out, and an agreement. The workers won the battle but that was a long way from winning the war. Auto-Lite gave the union a 30-day contract, which basically stated the company would recognize the union for thirty days, but even in that thirty days the company refused to recognize the union as a bargaining representative of the workers. When this thirty ays reached its conclusion, the union was no better off then when it started. In fact in those thirty days the company was preparing itself for a strike. They started mass hiring new workers, so they could keep running the company if the labor walked out. The second strike began on April 13, and consisted of some 400 Auto-Lite workers. The strike seemingly divided the work force equally, as many went in as picketed. Then on May 3, a court injunction restricted the number of picketers at one time to a minuscule twenty-five. This rallied the surrounding men and women in the area to unite and break this injunction hat limited all of their freedom. On May 21, 22, and 23 more then 6,000 men and women united in front of Auto-Lite to hear speakers and to protest the company, along with protesting the court injunction. This is when the real trouble started for the company and the picketers. On May 23, A young women by the name of Alma Hand was stuck by a steel bracket which caused a riot among the crowd, and which initiated a raid on the building. The deputies fired tear gas at the would be invaders to stop them from storming the facility. That night a raging crowd refused to allow the scabs off the premises. After this episode, the Ohio National Guard was called in to restore the peace. These guardsmen only worsened the situation. On the next day, May 24, they charged the crowd wounding 12, then firing their rifles and killing one, then later that same day, they fired once again wounding two more picketers. By the 26th of May, with demands that the plant be closed and the Guard withdraw, another tragic confrontation occurred. The crowd attacked the Guard, 200 were injured and 50 were arrested. The plant remained closed for the following week and did not reopen until June 5. At this point, the strikers had emerged victorious. After all the hardships, injuries, and deaths, the union had been established and recognized. This was a shallow victory at first due to a number of circumstances. First of all, the old workers who remained at work throughout the strike had preference during the rehiring process. Secondly, betrayers who associated themselves with management formed their own bargaining organization called the Auto-Lite Council. This organization acquired for them preference in rehiring. The Auto-Lite Council soon diminished in numbers, while Local 18384 was increasing dramatically. This was due to the realization that the strikers were the ones who had won them collective bargaining, not the Auto-Lite Council. Therefore, their loyalties lied with the organization that had created the situation in which they had more power, respect, and The Auto-Lite strike is a perfect example of how the labor movement has advanced. The first strike only involved a mediocre 15 men. The second strike reached out to about 50% of the work force. The men and women of Auto-Lite had embraced their union and made it their own. This represents the labor movement because at the start only about million workers were unionized. At the pinnacle of the movement nearly 50% of the work force was organized, the number was in excess of 10 million individuals. Workers saw how the union could help them. They saw solidarity and unity, which when combined produced a force to be reckoned with. The union provided for higher wages, more benefits, and better working conditions. This idea is what attracted more members and this belief is what united the men and women at Auto-Lite. The strike also represents the risks and hardships accepted by the organizers who take on the challenge of forming a union. The 15 who went out in the first Auto-Lite strike took the chance of losing their jobs and hampering their families welfare to form a union just to help every worker in the plant. The men also accepted that they were going to lose their jobs and would have to fight for reinstatement. But all the risks taken, and all the brief hardships felt were well worth it considering the ends. Their union was recognized. Not to the extent they wished, but nonetheless they won recognition, which catapulted them to eventual complete victory. This result was not always the case. In some strikes the union failed nd the workers lost big. To the credit of the workers, their supporters, and their organizers the men and women of Auto-Lite were triumphant and won the fight of all fights; to gain respect, power, and recognition. This event was the turning point in labor relations in the city of Toledo. It gave confindence and self worth to the working class, and stripped the company management of their unimpeded omnipotence. The Auto-Lite Strike of 1934 changed the entire way that company operations were run, and for that, those who work in Toledo should be applauded, and recognized for the achievements they accomplished.

Toxic Hazard and Risk of Lead for Consumers - Essay Example Lead is a highly toxic substance which when ingested may lead to irreparable neurological damage in children (ATSDR, 1999), kidney diseases, cardiovascular problems and reproductive complications. In 2007 Lead was ranked as the second most toxic substance after Arsenic (ATSDR, 2007). The toxicology of Lead is a result of its chemical similarity with Calcium thus the human body confuses Lead for Calcium and incorporates it into the bone marrow, kidney and the brain. Inasmuch as Lead affects adults, its effects on children can be fatal. A minimum of 10g/ml blood Lead impairs mental and physical development in children. A maximum of 80g/ml blood Lead leads to convulsions, comma and death. Lead poisoning can be detected through a number of symptoms. In children, the symptoms include abdominal pain, anaemia, vomiting, weight loss, short concentration span, hyperactivity, petulance and a slow speech development. In adults, the symptoms may include abdominal pain, memory loss, pale skin, weight loss, vomiting, petulance and anaemia. Lead poisoning can come from a number of exposure routes. All students, faculty staff and all visitors in IUB are exposed to these routes. First, the exposure route involving Lead Based Paint (LBP) is a major source. The paints used IUB buildings may chip off due to wear and tear, moisture friction or deliberate removal during renovation. The chips contain lead and mix with the dust which can be inhaled. The chips in the soil may leech and end up in water bodies. This route is not an acute exposure route. It is only acute to children who are fond of mouthing non food objects and substances. The preventive action to avert this exposure is to use Non- Lead paints which are of the same quality and glaze just like LBP. Industrial/ occupational Lead exposure is another possible route in that workers in a factory or laboratory that handles Lead are exposed to lead. Examples of such workers in IUB are those in pottery (Use Lead glaze), automotive repair (inhale exhaust fumes with Lead), industrial machinery and equipment, (inhale exhaust fumes with Lead) and chemistry students/laboratory technicians (analyze LBP or even handle elemental lead). Students of ceramics who use Lead glaze may inhale the Lead fumes involved in the Lead glaze. Those individuals threatened by this kind of exposure need to be careful and keen to wear protective gear such as masks to prevent the inhalation of the Lead fumes. This exposure is an acute threat because of the form and amount of Lead inhaled. The amount inhaled can be specifically high because the Lead is in gaseous form. Dishware is another exposure route. The plates and cups made of melamine or glass with a lead glaze, used by the students and faculty at the cafeteria or any other eating place, are a real threat. This is so because acidic food (such as tomato sauce, coffee, juice etc) kept in these containers may exacerbate lead leeching which can lead to lead poisoning.
